IEEE

The IEEE (Eye-triple-E) is a non-profit,technical professional association of more than 380,000 individual members in 150 countries. The full name is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., although the organization is most popularly known and referred to by the letters I-E-E-E.

Through its members, the IEEE is a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics, among others.

Through its technical publishing, conferences and consensus-based standards activities, the IEEE

  • produces 30 percent of the world’s published literature in electrical engineering, computers and control technology
  • holds annually more than 300 major conferences
  • has nearly 900 active standards with 700 under development

    IEEE Madras section

    IEEE Madras Section has an active membership of 382 life/senior members/ members. The student membership amounts to 942. The IEEE Madras Section conducts technical lectures by eminent personalities from several fields, symposiums and conferences. The madras section recently conducted a technical lecture on “Post-Genomics Biology: Opportunities for the IT Industry” – By Dr. M. Vidyasagar, Executive Vice President, Advanced Technology, TCS.

    IEEE GOLD

    In 1996, IEEE instituted efforts to explore how to improve the retention and better meet the needs of recently graduated Student members. The concept of developing a peer group evolved and was named GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade). The GOLD group is defined as post-student members who are within ten years of receiving their first professional degree.

    The most important action for GOLD members was to promote the concept at the local level. In 1998, the IEEE approved the formation of non-technical groups called Affinity Groups. Affinity Groups are formed under the joint supervision of the local Section and parent entity (GOLD, Women in Engineering, Consultants’ Network). Since the inception of Affinity Groups, GOLD members have embraced this concept and formalized GOLD Affinity Groups worldwide. Many varied activities, both social and community minded, are planned and organized by this group to meet and interact with their peers.

    IEEE GOLD empowers young graduates to make the most of their developing career and to help them find a place in the world of technology.
